Why Did I Want to be a Teacher...Let's See..

For my last class, I was given a writing assignment. I had to do two things. 1) Write about why I chose my major, and 2) Why I think I will succeed in whatever my major is.

Well, I guess I should start out by saying, that I am currently finishing up my degree in Elementary, Special, and Early Childhood Education. I also have a Math Minor, a Spanish Minor, an Exceptionalities Minor, and a minor in Non Profit Leadership, which is, by far, the only part of college that I've enjoyed. If that sounds like a lot, it was a ton to do in almost three years. I don't know why I wanted to, but I'm so glad I've gotten college over and done with. Well...we'll get to that later.

Anyways, I guess I'm supposed to write about my major, and why I chose it, and so my story begins. In all honesty, I never once wanted to be a teacher growing up. I wanted to be a doctor. I had my whole life set on it. Then, in the spring of my senior year, I all of a sudden had this genius plan of becoming a teacher. Why? Because I wanted to make a difference, and change children's lives. That's a good answer, right? The thing is, I want to make a difference in this world, more than I've ever wanted to do anything in my entire life. I want to touch others lives with my life, and I want to learn, and never stop excelling, and growing in my knowledge. I'll go more into that last bit, later.

I think another reason as to why I wanted to be a teacher, was because my younger brother has special needs, in fact, he has a form of Autism. I guess being around him my whole life, made me want to somehow help these children in any way that I possibly could. I want to take steps that will bridge the gap between special needs children and "regular" children, somehow making them equal to all other children, and I want people to see just how special, loving, caring, and amazing they truly are.

Alright, enough of that.

Why do I think I will succeed as a teacher? Meh, this might be a bit tougher.

I suppose the first reason would be because I adore children. I love them, and I can't seem to get enough of them. Second, I want to make a difference. Third, I have a huge heart, and I'd give every single piece of it to my students. Fourth, I am a very patient person. I can take on a lot, and I'm normally completely calm about it. Fifth, I'm not known to give up. I know, especially with special needs children, there's only so much you can do. There comes a point when you've done everything you can to help them. Right? No! I hate when people always say that. I believe that there is always something else that you can do, even if it's just repetition, that child needs you, and in all reality, you need that child. Sixth, I have so much to give, and I have so much that I want to take back from these children. I want to learn more about myself through them, and from them, and in return, I want to impact their lives, enough so that they remember me when they're 20 something, or maybe even 50 something.

I guess, lately I've realized, that yes, as much as say I don't want to teach, and that teaching's not for me, I want to be a teacher. I am going to make a difference, and I'm not going to stop until I do.

  1. I still don't know why you dropped out of NYU. I thought you were going for an entertainment marketing major there?

Well you would be great as a teacher, but you have to follow your heart. If you don't, you'll always wonder what could have been.
